Much Appreciated

Sorry for not posting, but I had a long trip on the road to Indianapolis yesterday. I finally made it and am enjoying myself with my family.

This is another card I made for PCL Interiors. She will give it as a thank you card to her clients. She provided the fabric she used to make window treatments. I tried to be creative and make three "windows" then include the couple's initials in each "window." I popped the window and the letters off of the fabric. The photo is shadowy, but you can see the "much appreciated" sentiment stamped underneath the focal point. I zig zag stitched around the two card stocks to compliment the PCL Interior's sewing of the window treatments!

Scor-Pal: A Review

What is the Scor-Pal?
I have wanted the Scor-Pal since I discovered it earlier this year. It is a light-weight tool that allows you to score paper easily and effectively. Most people probably use a scoring tool or a scoring blade to score their paper prior to folding. This has worked for me for months, but I find that I do not get the professional score that you see in manufactured pre-scored card kits. Well, if you want that look and precise professional scores and folds, then you need the Scor-Pal! It has measurements so you can easily decide where you need to score your paper. It also comes with its own scoring tool!

Is it easy to use?
Last night, I used my Scor-Pal for the first time only by quickly glancing at the directions on the back of the packaging. I knew exactly where I wanted to score, so I just placed my card stock down and scored, using the tool provided, with consistent medium force. I could not believe it! The first time, a perfect score. The card folded so easily!

What is the damage?
The Scor-Pal is reasonably priced at $39.99. You can purchase it at Archiver's or online. If you make a lot of scores, then this product is a necessity. It also helps me out by not having to switch my straight blade to a scoring blade, which creates more productivity for me. It is light-weight and easily storable under my table for quick use and re-storing. The bone folder that it comes with stores in a locking position at the top so it does not get lost.

Other Information
Scor-Pal features a great web site with tips and ideas for you to use your device in more ways than imaginable! They have an accessible magazine with ideas on gate folds, recipe boxes, and other gifts.

Here is the first score I created using the Scor-Pal. Although you may not be able to actually see it, it is there! This card is the first of four I created for a customer. She is giving her clients thank you cards for using her interior design services. You can check out her work here. I will post the remaining cards later this week. She requested customization for each card, most with elements she incorporated in the designs she created in their homes.

To create this card, I cut a piece of of the pattern paper in half, then reversed it, so one side would be "blank." Then, I added ribbon and ruffeled it on the right side. To create the ruffle, I made a loop and placed glue dots to secure each ruffle. Next, I added white thickers to create "Mary." I did not like the stark white letters, so I inked them in yellow, orange, and brown to create a more finished look. I added brads at the top and bottom. I placed the flower on the left of the card for a popped element of the pattern paper. The card needed a sentiment, so I used rub-ons to create the words "thank you." This was more time consuming than the typical rub-ons because I had to place each letter in its proper position to create the right angle I wanted.

Scrapbook Layouts for Riley

Here are a few scrapbook layouts for Riley and her parents to preserve memories. I completed this book a couple of months ago, but forgot to share with you!

This page and the next picture are one layout for "Daddy's Little Girl." I embellished each of the pages with flowers, ribbon, rub-ons, buttons and stickles!

This pattern paper is from a DCWV Spring mat stack. The die-cut letters are by using Cricut and I made some of the letters backwards for a fun 'kiddie' effect.

This is one page of a layout of "precious angel." The flowers are cut from a pattern paper. I cut a wave strip and punched holes with my crop-a-dile.

For this layout, I punched the circles to match the circle pattern paper. Then, I stamped "Riley" on each circle and popped them off of the paper. I made this page simple for a large 8" x 10" picture.

All babies have onesies, so I thought to create a onesie page. To create the onesie, I sketched it, then cut it out. For the neck and leg holes, I used my circle punch and cut a half of a circle. I embellished the onesie with ribbon and brads. The letters are die-cuts by using the Cricut.

The next two pictures are a layout of the 'birthday.' I used chipboard letters of the date of birth. I overlapped the the mats for the pictures for a unique effect. I added simple flowers to embellish the page.

For the 'birth' I used chipboard letters. Then, I stamped 'day' in Versamark, then applied metallic embossing powder and heated it!

"Sweet baby girl" is a fun layout with pink and brown. I punched circles and then added eyelets at the top with the die-cut letters for 'sweet.' I inked around the corner-edged mats for the pictures.

This was a simple page because the DCWV mat stack included the "baby girl" pattern paper. I added the brown mats for the pictures along with the pink polka dot ribbons on the corners.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day! I got a chance to stop by Archiver's in Raleigh and picked up too much stuff, including a SCOR-PAL!!! I will be writing a review about it soon!

The Stamping and Scrapbooking Room: Another Review

Happy Memorial Day! Today, I am going to give another quick review of the Stamping and Scrapbooking Room located in Greensboro, NC. I am on one of my many trips to Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham, NC and am visiting a few scrapbooking stores this weekend. Betty, the owner, greeted me as I entered the store once again. Her husband was also there and assisted me during my visit. They even wanted my Yorkie, Ozzy (pictured right - pre-summer cut) to come in to be a part of the shopping experience! He came in and and also gave his 'stamp' of approval.

Since this is my second visit to this store, I have a different perspective of my review. This store has absolutely everything you need! I even purchased my last two sets of Spellbinder's Nestabilities I wanted (rectangles and ovals). They offered them at the low bundle price of $79.99 each, competitive with the online prices. They also offer a wide selection of Cricut supplies. I decided on the "New Arrival" cartridge since I have to complete one more baby scrapbook and probably many more! This store has a wide selection of stamps, paper, and embellishments. They have a very nice selection of paper flowers and every time I visit, they are always on SALE! Betty informed me about her new online store that is launched. The new web site is www.thescrapbookingroom.com. Once you are there, click on "Shop our Store." They are continuing to put more products on line all of the time, so frequent online shopping is necessary!

Later, I will be stopping by Archiver's for their great selection of envelopes and pre-scored cards. They have a very high quality selection and I just can't wait! Have a great day!

EDITED TO ADD: You can read my original review of The Stamping and Scrapbooking Room here.

Welcome to the World, Lauren

Yep, another baby! As I stated in a previous post, babies are 'in style' for 2008. Baby Lauren was born earlier this month and someone wanted to send her and her parents congratulations. My cards can be customized, which is what most people like about some of my styles.

Have a great Memorial Weekend and please take time to remember U.S. soldiers who have and are fighting for our country.

Customized Acrylic Scrapbook

This is an acrylic book. My creation of it defeats the purpose of an acrylic book because I almost completely covered it! I did use double-side paper to get the most out of it, so I guess I did alright! I used so many different papers that I cannot recall! Here is the entire book of a celebration. Sometimes you may want to capture an event, but not in a large book...this is the ideal book for those occasions!

The acrylic book contains a total of 10 pages. I can typically fit about 10-15 pictures in each book depending on their sizes and content. They are bound by two rings. I decorate the rings with some ribbon.

I designed this book by customizing it with American Craft Thickers. I also used paper flowers and buttons to accentuate the page. I added the number "60" with Heidi Swapp brown chipboard numbers. The "captured moments" is a rub-on from TLC, who has now dissolved. However, you can still find their products here.

This is the next page of the book. Each page is decorated with the same theme for continuity and style!

Pages 4-5 show the occasion as it occurred. I use pictures to tell the story of the event so that random pictures are not scattered throughout the book.

Pages 6-7 is an example of how I took one photo and divided them into two! Sometimes pictures do not fit in small books, but you can always divide them to create different looks and add more pictures!

Pages 8-9 show more designs and I'm not sure what to elaborate on here!

This is the final page of the book. I continued the customization by adding another name. A ribbon is also added for dimension. I know you cannot tell, but the Happy Birthday balloon photo is cut out in a circle and popped off the picture. The original picture showed the balloon with a long ribbon, which was not conducive for this book, so I punched it out and popped it off the page to make sure it continued to be a memory forever!

Beyond Your Wildest Expectations

This card is a special request for a special person! This card is for a college graduate who is pursuing a medical career! I customized it to fit her future by stamping a stethoscope and some syringes. I also included her name on the card! The sentiment is popped of of the card for added dimension.

I created this onesie baby shower card for a client in last month and forgot to share with you! So, here it is! The expecting mother was having a girl, so I made it really pink! Thank You Requests

Last month, I received a request to create thank you cards for an organization. The color inspiration was baby blue and pink. I was also to think about the chapter flower of rosebud, so I created a few choices for the client to select and here are a couple. Can you guess which design she chose? Well, it was my favorite (the first card shown below)!

To create this card, I first cut my aqua mist 8.5 " x 11"card stock into 4.25" by 11", then scored it at 5.5" and folded. Next, I dry embossed it with the Cuttlebug and Spots and Dots embossing folder. TIP: Make sure the negative side is on the side of the paper you wish the embossing to be on (the side with the "Cuttlebug" logo is the negative side). Then, I cut pink card stock. It is popped off of the card as well. I paper pierced this example, but stitched around others for more pizazz. Next, I used Marvy Uchida circle punches for the pink and blue pattern paper punches. I used a Creative Memories circle punch for the white circle. I popped each circle off of the other with dimensionals and added the velvet brad. For other cards, I used pom pom balls for chalking as the pink center - a great substitution. For the stem of the "flower" I trimmed a very thin piece of spring moss card stock with my Martha Stewart precision scissors and applied to the paper. To stamp the "Thank You" sentiment, I placed the clear stamp on my acrylic block and curved it to fit the curve in the stem. I added the popped flower bud to the stem for completion.

Accessories: MM Velvet brad; Spots and Dots embossing folder; Cuttlebug

Card Size: 4.25" x 5.5"

This card was simple to complete. After cutting and scoring the the card stock to create my base card, I cut white and pink card stock for the center. Then, I trimmed the ribbon and applied around the pink card stock. I applied it to the white card stock. Next, I stamped the rose buds and cut them out. I cut white card stock squares and popped them off of two of them. Finally I stamped the "many thanks" sentiment and popped all three squares off of the pink card stock.

A New Design - My Story

How did I get into paper art?

Since my web site will completed soon, I thought I would share a little bit more about the creation of "A New Design" and myself! I have been a 'crafty' person since I was a child. It all started with a paint set that my parents gave me one Christmas. At the time, I was probably around 8 years old. My intentions were to be like Bob Ross who was a great painter that I used to watch on TV. Well, I painted my version of "pretty little trees" once and never painted again! Oil paints never get old, so I ended up giving them to my now husband who paints to use! He could not believe all of the supplies I had, as if I were a 'real' artist!

A few years down the road (late elementary - early middle school age), I started designing barrettes and headbands. I was most 'famous' for the balloon barrettes and jewel encrusted headbands! During middle school, I also designed fashion pieces, such as denim jeans and shorts with appliqués. Remember when ties were in style for girls? Well, I designed one for myself along with some embroidered sweatshirts for school spirit. By the time I entered high school, I was well into fashion and designed my own 8th grade spring dance dress and also my senior prom dress. I took a lot of fashion and marketing related classes and was heavily involved in DECA, an association of marketing students. So, in the 8th grade I started my first scrapbook. I included pictures of friends and magazine clippings that I could not part with. Since I was heavily into fashion, I subscribed to Vogue and W magazine and of course YM too, so some clippings were priceless! I also used my computer (as far as it would take me during that time) by word processing titles to include in the scrapbook. I used "painters" markers to journal in the book as well.

After high school, I went to college to major in marketing and management And since I was not ready to work, I continued my education to get a master's in business administration. Still, I was not ready to work...so, I went to law school. During law school, I discovered scrapbooking again and realized there were actually stores now specifically for the craft! Maybe that is the real reason I went to law school!

I started my first book - our trip to London. I look at the book now and hate it! After that, I made a book for my husband (at the time boyfriend) and then of our engagement. I also gave books away as gifts. After law school, I was busy with wedding planning, so I did not do that much paper art for about a year, then was re-introduced when I discovered another store, Recollections. This store was amazing and taught me a lot more about paper art than I ever knew. I took many classes and learned a wealth of knowledge on tools and how to use them. Recollections introduced me to cardmaking, which is great because it is a faster process than completing an entire scrapbook.

After I started making cards and sending them to family and friends, I received an overwhelming response to start my business. So, I started A New Design! Since Recollections' closing, I have been 'on my own' and use the internet to continue learning. That's why I decided to blog. My blog is called "Confessions of a Paper Artist" and is to communicate to the world about my paper art. Feel free to leave a comment on my blog posts about a posting or a card!

Some of you already know about how I came up with the name "A New Design." Well, the A = Ashley and the New = Newell (my last name) with the incorporation of design! I have the nickname "anew" that no one calls me, but I thought it was cute since I have a new 'married' name and a new venture. I love all types of design from fashion to interior to paper art, so I thought just in case I expanded, I can keep the same name, plus I always like to come up with "new designs;" hence, my slogan "Something Bold...Something New."

My web site is still being designed and will soon be introduced. I expect to have a 'grand opening' of it some time in June (crossing fingers) with many cards for you to select from to buy! I appreciate all of the encouragement and support everyone has provided me as I embark on my new venture! Thanks for reading my blog (almost daily) and appreciating my designs!

Something BOld...Something New

congrats

I made this card to wish someone congratulations on 'something!' It can be for school or any other accomplishment or good news! I used my corner punch (removed the guard) to create the scalloped edge at the top of the card! It was my first time using this technique and I like it! I left the scalloped edge kind of popped off for a three-dimensional effect. The American Craft Thickers are amazing! However, I suggest using some glue dots to make sure they are securely affixed to your paper. Although they are self-adhesive, I find that they are easily removed, so to set them in place, I add a few glue small glue dots on the back of each letter!

a scrappy recovery

I used all scraps (minus the pre-scored card) to create this card! I am so proud of it! I have so many scraps, so I feel a sense of accomplishment when I use some of my scraps to create a new card! I stitched around the edges of the green card stock with a straight stitch, going over it a few times for added elements! I added an embossed neutral card stock on top and popped it off of the green card stock. I also distressed the edges. The ribbon is simply tied around the green card stock. The sentiment is added for a friend of ours who is recovering from a stroke. We wish him a speedy recovery! To finish it off, I inked the edges of the card with my cat's eye.

This graduation card was customized for the school colors (blue and gold). Various stars are stamped in blue and gold ink on white card stock. I also stamped some stars in gold on blue card stock, then popped them off the paper for added dimension. I layered it on blue card stock then used a ticket punch for the corners of the white card stock. I added gold brads to the corners. The sentiment is stamped in blue at the bottom of the kraft pre-scored card from Michaels. The inside featured white card stock with a graduation sentiment by Ralph Waldo Emerson and more blue stars. Hobby Lobby: A Review

Hobby Lobby, Stone Mountain, GA

Last week, I was in Atlanta, GA on business travel. On Friday morning before heading to the airport, I made a quick stop by Hobby Lobby. I had to squeeze in one paper art adventure! Since the Washington DC Metro area does not have a Hobby Lobby, I have been itching to visit one. I used to live in Greensboro, NC where they have a Hobby Lobby, but their paper art supply department has grown tremendously since the 1990s!

I entered the store soon after they opened around 9:30 am, so I pretty much had the store to myself! I made my way to the scrapbook section to find rows and rows of fantastic supplies! I stocked up on the new American Craft Thickers, some flowers, chipboard, GLITTER, and 8x8 hard-to-find albums! I was also able to find some football and basketball brads that will go perfect in my cousin's scrapbook! I hope to share some of these great new finds with you this week!

Hobby Lobby is a great place for a lot of 'stuff.' Not only do they have scrapbooking supplies, but they also have furniture and other craft supplies as well. Their scrapbooking supply department was unique and different compared to Michaels and A.C. Moore. Their prices were reasonable and typical craft store prices. I cannot wait to visit another Hobby Lobby location soon. I will probably be able to visit Indianapolis' store later this month! So, if you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, please do not forget to use them as a resource. If not, on your next trip, plan a visit! Another option is to shop online at Crafts, Etc. a company that Hobby Lobby endorses. Crafts, Etc. sells a lot of items that Hobby Lobby carries, so it is a great substitute! I found just about all of the items I purchased online, so I provided links above!

I will post a card tomorrow! My birthday was Saturday, so I have been on R&R for the past few days! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend as much as I did!

Uh Oh...Someone is Turning 40!

Uh Oh...Someone is turning 40! Well, you better believe it's not me! This card was requested to say "The Big 40!," so that is exactly what it says on a piece of notebook paper. The notebook paper adds a personalized style. I stamped the background kraft card stock in polka dot for a little pattern. I added the clear flower and a jewel bud to the center for a little something extra that was not too much. The card is divided by a polka dot ribbon and pink flourish style pattern paper. I hope she enjoys her 40th!

Cheers!

I created this card in response to Kristina Werner's Color Inspiration # 7 Challenge. Although I did not get a chance to 'submit' it to her blog, I still completed it! I simply added strips of blue paper on top of the brown. I also stitched on top of some of the blue strips. Yes, the stitching is supposed to appear crooked and frazzled! "Cheers" is stamped on the blue card stock and layered using the colors, adhering to the color challenge. I also added three brown brads to the top left corner. I also corner-rounded the bottom edges of the card.

Birthday Wishes...for a Guy

This "birthday wishes" card was created last week during what I know now as my "allergy attack!" I have never had allergies before, but I guess I have a small case of them now. It seems to be cleared up now, but I'll take my meds for another month or so to make sure! As for the card, it was a simple 10-minute card between watery and burning eyes and head full of pressure! Papertrey Ink's Out on a Limb stamp set is easier to use now than ever. I really like the tree limbs and the options of the leaves or buds! The motto, "practice makes perfect" really does fit in the paper art area, so it's never too late to jump on in and start paper crafting! Although there is never a perfect, there is a fun and creative process. Does this card look masculine? Well, I tried to make it as masculine as I could, which is a challenge that I have all of the time!

As an update on my "shopping" web site...the design is coming along nicely! I have seen and approved some great proofs and cannot wait for it to be completed!! I hope everyone will like it as much as I do! The site should be completed later this month with products (cards and other paper art) for sale by a June grand opening date!! Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Victorian Birthday Wishes

After designing this card, it reminded me of the Victorian style. The Basic Grey pattern paper features the damask design, so I followed the theme by using a similar stamp. The Victorian style is kind of 'heavy' so to speak, in my opinion, so I thought to emboss the navy blue card stock with the swiss dots Cuttlebug embossing folder. The center of the navy card stock is white, so it popped through in the contrasting color. This card was supposed to follow a challenge layout, but I will admit, I make mistakes too! The mistake was I dropped my acrylic block while trying to stamp my blue damask (AAAAH!), so I had to cover it with the circles and flowers on the "wrong" side that the challenge stipulated. But, who will ever know? Now everyone! The point is, most of the time, if you make a mistake, it can fixed, making it a challenge instead of a 'mistake.' Who is perfect anyway? Not me! Have a great day!

Congratulations to the Graduates

Mother's Day is not the only major event most people need cards for; there are also graduations. Whether high school or college, I can customize a special card for any graduate. Here are a couple of cards I designed for a college graduate.

I used the cuttlebug embossing technique on this card where I inked the negative side of my spots and dots embossing folder in black, then embossed on the green paper, which creates a different kind of distressed effect. Make sure you immediately clean your embossing folder to remove all of the ink. I use quick and easy baby wipes; they do the trick! Next, I stamped the "G-Graduate" stamp with Versamark, then applied black embossing powder and dried. I popped it off of the card and added black buttons.

Kate Spade Inspiration

Well at least Kate Spade caught your attention! I participated in Beate's Be Inspired #11 that is based off of a Kate Spade card. I was inspired by the simple layout, the colorful dots, and the colors. So, here is what I created!

First, I stamped the background flower stamp in various colors, allowing them to 'grow' off the card. Next, I stamped the outlining flower in brown over the background color. Then I used the bud stamps as circles to stamp in various colors. The sentiment "Friends are the flowers in the garden of life" is stamped in brown ink flowing through the flowers. The benefit of using clear stamps in their versatility. So, I curved my stamp on the acrylic block, first making sure it was in the right shape, then stamped! It adds great appeal and looks custom printed...only I stamped it all!! I'm shocked! Thanks Beate for this challenge, as I learned more than I thought I would! I also stamped a portion of the white envelope to match the card!
